"pieces"
The use of the word "piece" when describing an item of clothing, a collectable, jewelry, etc. etc. leaves an interesting, not great feeling to me.
Example: "I'm so happy to add this piece to my collection... this is such a beautiful piece..."
It reminds me of how you would describe art in a gallery. Yes, everything is art, but it gives off a haughty feeling when used. Especially when it's seemingly promoting over-consumption and fast-anything.
Is it truly curated if the thing you buy is going to be collecting dust in a cabinet in a few weeks? If it will land back into the donation bins after it's been milked of content?
Yes, I too contribute to over-consumption. But the use of describing these items as "pieces" makes it seem luxurious, curated, refined, when it really is just... eventual trash.
When someone like Bernadette Banner, who is extremely knowledgeable about the art of fashion and who makes extravagant and artful clothes, refers to her clothing as "pieces", it makes sense. She is has an extremely curated wardrobe, is knowledgeable about the effects certain purchasing decisions has, and treats her clothes as art.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the influencers I see, buy something for content, then donate them afterwards. It doesn't sit right with me when they call something a "piece". It's not deserving to the items they buy. These items aren't loved and cared for enough for them to be called "pieces"
